Burn Out

Did you know in 2019, the World Health Organization reached a significant milestone classifying "burnout" as a medical diagnosis. In the International Classification of Diseases, the handbook that guides medical providers in diagnosing conditions describes burnout as " a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed."

Three Burnout Symptoms:
1. Feelings of Energy Depletion or Exhaustion.
2. Increased mental distance from one's job or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job.
3. Reduced professional efficacy.

Surveys show that 60% of work absenteeism is attributed to psychological stress or stress related to burnout. According to a recent survey 40% of 2,000 employees said they were considering quitting because of burnout. As a result of burnout translates into a loss of anywhere from $150 to $350 billion annually for U.S Businesses.

Research suggests that when employees feel like they have a degree of control over their work and receive support from colleagues and superiors, the stress or burnout can decrease. The most effective way that companies can get a head of burnout is by watching the way managers run their teams. It's vital for employees to get the opportunity to provide feedback to the higher-ups at any time and that management heed their call to provide adequate time for employees to recover from this cycle to mitigate the downward spiral of burnout.
